People typically fall into two categories when it comes to determining how frequently to wash clothes: the sniff testers and the laundry day observers.
The sniff testers simply hold up a piece of clothing to their nose, take a big whiff, and determine whether or not the items need to be washed. The laundry day observers throw everything in their laundry basket throughout the week until laundry day arrives.
Neither strategy is particularly helpful as each type of clothing needs to be washed at different frequencies. Here, we’ll take an in-depth look at how often you should wash your clothes to make sure you’re smelling fresh without using more energy than you have to.
Underwear: 1 wearing
This hopefully doesn’t come as news to anybody, but underwear should be washed after each use. In fact, any piece of clothing that has close contact with the skin for extended periods of time should immediately get thrown in the laundry basket after being worn. This includes underwear, socks, and undershirts. The oils and sweat from your skin make these undergarments smell and stain quickly. Yuck! The only exceptions to the one-use rule for undergarments are bras. They can typically be worn three or four times before needing to be washed, although it depends on how much you’re sweating and how much activity you’re doing.
Shirts: 1-2 wearings
Shirts come in a variety of materials and styles, making it difficult to give a steadfast rule for washing frequency. In general, it’s a good idea to throw your shirt in the washing machine after one or two uses. Tight-fitted shirts that sit close to the skin probably need to get washed after every wear. On the other hand, looser-fitting styles can make it longer because these shirts pick up less sweat and stench from your body. Of course, if you’re the type of person that perspires a lot, you might have to wash your shirts after every use no matter what. And anytime you need to remove stubborn stains, you’ll want to wash your shirts as quickly as possible.
Dress Pants: 4-5 wearings
Dress pants and even suit jackets can go four to five uses before being dry cleaned. These pieces of clothing are generally looser in design and made of high-quality material. They’re also typically worn for short periods of time indoors where perspiration would be at a minimum. Depending on the environments you visit when wearing dress pants or a suit jacket, you might have to dry clean these pieces of clothing more often. Smoke, smog, and other pollutants in the air can alter the smell of these materials quickly and even lead to stains when not cleaned regularly.
Jeans: 4-5 wearings
Denim is a highly durable and resistant material. In other words, it’s not as subject to your body chemistry as some other types of materials. So, you’ll most likely end up washing your jeans the least frequently out of all your other clothes. While some people go as far as to suggest six weeks in between each washing, it’s better to make the call based on how many times you wear your jeans. As long as you’re not living like a cowboy, washing your jeans every four to five wears should be more than enough. Just make sure you’re using the right washing setting and reading the laundry tags properly as jeans can become faded and thinner over time.
Pajamas: 3-4 wearings
Pajamas only need to be washed around twice a week or after three or four uses. Even though you’re wearing pajamas every night, you’re probably freshly showered before putting them on. Besides, there’s not a lot of risk for getting stains on your pajamas or sweating a bunch when you’re sleeping. With this washing frequency, it’s enough to have three or four pairs of pajamas. This way, you’ll always have a fresh clean pair waiting for you!
